Hogwarts on Water: Our Trip to St. Michael's Mount

Hello everyone!

We drove to the southwesternmost point of England - Cornwall! And that's a good six hours of driving from London. Six. Hours. The whole time, I kept asking myself: "Is it worth it?" Spoiler: it was worth it.

And then, after endless miles on the road, we saw it - the island of St. Michael's Mount. And I'm telling you, it's pure magic. Imagine a rocky island with a medieval castle with turrets on top, all surrounded by azure water. My first thought was: "So, this is Hogwarts!" It felt like a owl with a letter might fly out the window at any moment.

But the main feature of this place is the path. An old cobbled path leads to the castle, which is completely flooded twice a day by the tide. So, nature decides when you can walk, and when you can only go by swimming (or on a special boat). We timed our visit perfectly and walked, and it was an incredible feeling - walking knowing that in a couple of hours, water would be splashing here.

By the way, a little tip for travelers: entry to the island and the castle was free for us because we have a membership to the National Trust. This card has already paid for itself many times during our trips around Britain, so I highly recommend it.

The only thing we slightly regret is that we didn't have time to visit the famous gardens, which descend in terraces down the slopes of the island. We arrived just after closing time. Well, that gives us a reason to return!

And now, a funny story about boots. When preparing for the trip, I, being the smartest person, declared: "There's a tide there! You definitely need rubber boots!" In the end, we arrived, and the path to the castle was completely dry and safe. And there we were, looking like fools in rubber boots, while everyone else was walking around in sneakers. But to justify their existence (after all, I carried them all the way across the country), I deliberately went off the path and walked along the shallow water next to it. And you know what I saw there? A whole underwater civilization of slippery green seaweed and shells clinging to the rocks. So, the mission to "wear the boots" was accomplished!

In short: the trip was amazing. St. Michael's Mount is a place where you feel like a hero of a fairy tale or an ancient legend. So, if you're in Cornwall, it's a must-see. Definitely worth every hour of the journey.
